Position Description
Assistant Professor - Department of Molecular Microbiology & Immunology, College of Sciences.

The Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) seeks an outstanding candidate for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in bacterial pathogenesis, beginning Fall 2025. The candidate must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree with postdoctoral research experience in their respective areas of research. We seek an outstanding candidate who apply cutting-edge approaches to timely topics in areas of prokaryotic pathogenesis such as host-microbiome interactions, omics approaches, chronic immune diseases, vaccine development, cellular immunology, microbial immunity, mucosal immunology, adaptive/innate immunity and vector-pathogen interactions. The successful candidate is expected to develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program and participate in teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate level.

College
The College of Sciences (COS) at UTSA is committed to innovation and excellence in the classroom and laboratory and is dedicated to producing the next generation of well-educated, highly trained professionals and leaders.

COS offers 17 undergraduate degree programs and 19 graduate degree programs in the life sciences, physical sciences, computer science, and mathematics, which is supported by over 300 faculty members across 8 academic departments. Department
The MMI Department consists of an engaged community of researchers, educators, and students with a shared vision of innovative discovery and education of students at the undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral level. The department includes 18 tenured or tenured track (T/TT) faculty members, four teaching-focused faculty, and six faculty in the research track. The Department offers a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology and Immunology, a Master's program in Biotechnology, and Ph.D. degree in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. Research in the department is focused in the areas of host-pathogen interactions (HPI), disease intervention and vaccines (DIV), immunology (IMM) and microbial genomics (GEN). Within those areas, our faculty conduct research funded by NIH, NSF, DoD and other funding organizations in areas of bacteriology, mycology, virology, parasitology, autoimmunity, vaccine and drug development and genomics. The Department's exciting research environment is exemplified by a recent five-year, $6.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to MMI researchers to establish a San Antonio-based Coccidioidomycosis Collaborative Research Center (SA-CCRC). The Center is focused on developing therapeutics and vaccines against coccidioidomycosis which will support collaborative efforts of investigators from UTSA and UT Health San Antonio. The department also houses the MMI-T32 Predoctoral Training grant from NIAID and further contributes to the academic mission of the College of Sciences and UTSA through its associated South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases (STCEID). The MMI department has well-established partnerships with departments within the COS and local research institutions including UT-Health San Antonio and Texas Biomedical Research Institute. Position Summary
We seek an outstanding candidate who will establish an independent, cutting-edge research program in any area of bacterial pathogenesis, including host-microbiome interactions, omics approaches, chronic immune diseases, vaccine development, cellular immunology, microbial immunity, mucosal immunology, adaptive/innate immunity.

The candidate is expected to develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program and participate in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. Successful candidates are expected to support the University's mission as an R1 academic enterprise and its strong commitment as a Hispanic-serving institution and model for student success.

The successful candidate will join a highly interactive and collaborative group of faculty within the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology and the South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases. Research strengths comprise host-microbe interactions and molecular microbiology, including mycology, bacteriology, parasitology, microbiome, T and B cell function, novel vaccine design, autoimmunity, drug discovery and vector biology. The department and the college offer exceptional technical resources in many areas with access to expert personnel and core facilities, including flow cytometry and cell sorting, confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, proteomics, genomics, and a BSL3 facility.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree with post-doctoral experience in their respective areas of research.
